Woolpit CC Saturday 1st XI v Halstead Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 17 Apr 2021 at 12:00
Halstead Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Ed Clark’s reign as Halstead Club Captain got off to the best possible start with a 6-wicket victory at Woolpit on Saturday.

Two wickets apiece for Clark and Josh King helped restrict the hosts to 232-7 from their 50 overs before an unbeaten Josh Wells century guided the visitors home.

Woolpit won the toss and chose to bat, with Harry Bureau (4) crunching Joe Morris’ (1-41) first ball for four, though was bowled by one that nipped back two deliveries later. Kane Munday (44) and Chris Thomas (26) moved Woolpit past the 50 mark in the 12th over, before a Clark (2-41) inswinger accounted for Thomas.

Munday and former Italian international Andy Northcote (21) accumulated steadily, taking the hosts into three figures, but three wickets fell to left-arm spin in quick succession to twist it in Halstead’s favour. A double from Josh King (2-26), trapping Northcote lbw and bowling Oliver Melville Ross (9), as well as Craig Spooner’s (1-38) wicket of Munday, caught at long-off by Morris reduced the scores to 130-5.

A 61-run stand for the sixth wicket ensured, with Ryan Newcombe (47*) and Alex Packer (37) moving toward the 200 mark. Liam Jones (1-18) broke the stand when a well-flighted delivery was hit to Spooner at long-on. Clark took the final wicket to fall, Karl Holmes (17) snicking behind to Josh Wells when trying to accelerate, Woolpit finishing on 232-7.

Halstead did not start their reply fluidly, with Chris Rayner (0) caught third ball and Shorn Bobb (6) departing in the fourth over to leave Halstead at 19-2. George Heldreich (1-35) and Maddox Colby (1-53) with the wickets.

A rebuild was required and Harry Pritchard (37) and Josh Wells (119*) did just that, the former was patient whilst allowing the latter to play some shots. Wells brought up his 50 in 39 deliveries in the 18th over and by the time Pritchard was adjudged lbw to Kane Munday (1-63) the pair had put on 117 for the fourth wicket.

Craig Spooner (25) scored at nearly a run-a-ball in a 47-run stand with Wells, though fell caught and bowled to Andy Northcote (1-45), by which time the damage had been done.

Wells followed up his preseason 96 by reaching his century off 79 balls in the 35th over and just five overs later it was fitting that the skipper Clark (9*) hit the runs that secured his first league victory at the helm.
