Cricket and Coronavirus - May, 18 & 29 June Updates

02 Apr 2020

In late March Cricket Scotland announced that all cricket activity would cease until 1st June due to the situation relating to Coronavirus/Covid-19. Edinburgh South C.C. are complying with that instruction.

Cricket Scotland are keeping the position under review as are the East of Scotland Cricket Association who oversee the local league and cup competitions. Developments will be reported here.

Meantime we hope that all Edinburgh South players and their families and friends will stay safe and well by observing the appropriate safety instructions issued by the Government.

Update on 5th May

First round matches in the Parks Trophy were due to be played during this week but the Edinburgh Public Parks Cricket Association have decided to cancel both this long established Trophy, first competed for in 1891, and the more recent Terry Newcombe Memorial Trophy for the 2020 season.

Further decisions are awaited from Cricket Scotland and ESCA about what will, or will not, happen beyond the already announced date of 1st June.

Update on 17th May

On 12th May Cricket Scotland held a conference call with the Regional Associations and Leagues which resulted in the following being agreed and announced on 13th May:

  • No League Cricket or National Cup competitons in 2020.
  • Extending ban on all cricket activity until 1st July
  • Subject to further review the period from 1st July to be used for ground preparation, establishment of playing protocols and practice (outdoors.) Play to resume on 1st August with the season to be extended into September where local conditions allow.
  • ESCA, and other relevant Associations and Leagues, to facilitate fixtures for clubs in their regions.

On 14th May the cancellation was announced of both Scotland's ODI and T20I against New Zealand. Further announcements will be made about other planned international fixtures.

In relation to the final bullet point above ESCA will be consulting with clubs about the nature of the cricket which might be played. The twin aims will be participation and safety, as indicated in the third bullet point.

Update on 31st May

On 28th May the Scottish Government announced Phase 1 of their Steps out of Lockdown. Our sport was not mentioned in the details and soon afterwards Cricket Scotland confirmed that the relevant instructions had not changed. The position, therefore, remains that there will be no cricket activity until 1st July.

Update on 18th June

Although it has been necessary for Cricket Scotland to cancel the scheduled T20 International against Australia and the ICC have called off the round of World Cricket League 2 being hosted in Scotland in early July there is a piece of good news for cricketers in Scotland. Resumption of outdoor practice, with appropriate precautions, is now allowed from Monday 29th June.

Update on 29th June

As already intimated outdoor cricket practice is allowed from today. Edinburgh South will advise their resumption date at Inch Park when the necessary arrangements are in place for practice to go ahead in accordance with the protocols required. These include a Booking System, a Covid Monitor on duty at each practice to supervise hand sanitation, compliance with Social Distancing and observance of household groupings. Those practicing should bring their own kit including a ball and sanitising hand gel. It may be possible for the club to issue a ball but balls must not be shared with other participants whose number will be limited.
