Alan Waters 14/9/1955 - 27/11/2020
As a club, we are heartbroken to share the news that our former Chairman, Alan Waters, sadly passed away on Friday 27th November.
Alan had been bravely battling cancer following his recent diagnosis, and although his disease was terminal his sudden death was due to him contracting Coronavirus late last week.
Alan was a much loved member of the club which he did so much for, and I’m sure you’ll all agree he will leave an enduring legacy. Alan had been a member of the club for around 40 years. During his time at the club, Alan spent 23 years on the committee, 8 of which he was secretary and 14 of which he was the chairman. During his time on the committee he did so much for the club, for which we are all very grateful. Alan provided strong leadership as Chairman, whilst also supporting the day to day running of the club, often completing the unseen and unacknowledged tasks. His hard work undoubtedly secured the future of the club over many years. He always went about his business for us with enthusiasm and a smile on his face, it was these traits, amongst many others, which made him so popular with the members.
As a player he will always be remembered for his unique bowling style, one that regularly saw him top the charts in the second team averages or come pretty close to it as well as scoring valuable runs via his famous cover drive. He had only recently retired from playing having done so until his back and knees told him they could take no more.
His family have always been an integral part of the club too, his wife Susan, his son Andrew, who is a former first team captain, and son in law Stephen, who is a regular member of the Academicals side on a Sunday. Alan was proud that both his sons and grandchildren were keen cricketers and supporters of Consett Cricket Club.
We as a club are devastated by this news and would like to offer our sincerest condolences to all of his family and friends.
Alan was one in a million and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
