Hurley 2nd XI v The Lee Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 13:00
The Lee Cricket Club Lost by 64 runs
Match report
The penultimate game of the season was played on a breezy afternoon at Hurley. We lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. The Hurley openers started very cautiously, going at less than 3 an over for the first 10 overs, but not giving any chances. After their number 1 was bowled by Oliver however, they started to accelerate, and a 92 run second wicket partnership was only broken when Charlie Line came on to bowl some of his 'mystery balls' - much to the delight of the large group of Lee supporters who had called in to watch some of the game. As the skies darkened, their middle order started hitting out, and after a rain interval and early tea they ended up declaring on 245, leaving us 40 overs to chase it down.
The first over of our innings was bizarre, as Hurley kept the old ball, and bowled a spinner who was playing his first game in years. A succession of wides and no balls followed - sending the electronic scoreboard into a frenzy, but John Attley managed to miss the only decent delivery of the over and was bowled. So after one over we were 27 for 1(!). The next few overs were just as generous, and we were on 50 after just three overs, and the Hurley skipper was looking a bit nervous about his declaration. Mike Harris (34) edged one op to mid-wicket, Michael Cooper (34) got a very faint edge to the keeper and Michael Stark (25) was bowled. Jack Stark (34) and Jordan Essex (10) put up some resistance, but accurate bowling cleaned up the tail end, and we were all out for 181, well short of our target.
