Northwood Town Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI v Northwood IV on Sat 01 Aug 2020 at 1.00pm
Northwood Town Cricket Club Lost by 4 runs

Match report After the scorching hot weather of Friday; Northwood Town 3’s took on local rivals Northwood 4’s on a much more temperate Saturday afternoon.
Winning the toss; acting Captain Abdul Firfire standing in for Ajay Lal, elected to bowl first with the opening father and son combo of Jay and Viral Patel. Jay bowled tremendously well forcing the Northwood openers to play and miss several balls outside the off stump with no loose deliveries. On another day Jay would hope to bag several wickets. New recruits Hiren Halai (8-1-24-0) and Karan Verma (8-0-31-2) were the first change bowlers and continued the good work of the opening pair. Tight bowling and conservative batting had restricted Northwood to only 70 after 20 overs. They would have to start taking risks if they wanted to post a defendable score. Sure enough Verma got the breakthrough with Northwood opener Riyait (24) chipping the ball into the gleeful hands of Firfire standing at mid-off. Verma struck again with a vicious lifting ball to remove the seasoned Wallis (0), taken very neatly by gloveman Dominic Jones behind the stumps.
Northwood now had two young lads at the crease and were keen to push the score. Taking chances and running quick singles and outrageous two’s whilst our fielders were caught napping. Some dropped catches allowed them to accelerate to a formidable 189-7 off 40 overs despite some excellent bowling by Gordhandas (7-0-32-2) against set batsmen.
4pm….and the chase was on. Club stalwart Jonathan ‘JB’ Bentvelzen (44) opened the batting with newcomer Jaineel Dalwadi. Northwood took early wickets with Dalwadi stumped, Jones bowled though the gate and Sudagarna hitting a glorious four and then out. ‘Flash’ Gordhandas (47) joined JB at the crease. At one end we had swashbuckling agricultural shot making and at the other, JB with his excellent temperament and shot selection. Together they put on 80 for the 4th wicket before another mini collapse ensued. Viral Patel (41) played an excellent cameo at number 8 before being run out chasing an ambitious second run. The game was poised with Jay Patel and Firfire at numbers 10 and 11 at the crease needing 5 runs for victory with 14 balls remaining. Sadly it wasn’t to be with Jay unlucky to get a leading edge to first slip and Town losing by 4 runs.
Captain Firfire was left to dwell on an agonising loss. Better catching and smarter fielding would have turned the tie in our favour. A steep learning curve for the side but we come back stronger and better.
