Eight Ash Green Cricket Club News story

JAMIE IS GOING THE DISTANCE

19 Nov 2019

Jamie Murray isn’t one to shy away from a challenge, whether that be vertically, mentally or even batting to hold an innings together.

However, what Jamie is embarking on next is without a doubt the hardest thing he has done.

The 3-Peaks challenge is where you hike/walk/run/cycle up the peaks of the UK: Ben Nevis in Scotland, Snowdon in Wales and Scafell Pike in Yorkshire. Usually, you aim to climb them in 24 hours which was done by previous Greenie James Parker. You drive to each peak then climb.

Jamie is doing it a bit differently. On the first week of June Jamie, Mike and Tommie will not only hike the 13,200ft of mountains but also instead of driving will cycle the combined 494 miles to each mountain. In total around the distance from Eight Ash Green to Paris.. and then back!

Why are they doing this? Jamie and co are trying to raise £2500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. A charity that is close to Jamie’s heart and Eight Ash Greens. Jamie’s brother and EAGCC off-spinner Matt Murray has had a difficult pass to say the least. Matt was diagnosed with a rare tumour in the Pelvis in 2013. He underwent vigorous tests, chemotherapy, stem cell transplant and radiotherapy.

Matt went on to win this battle for the second time. Unfortunately, he was admitted in 2015 then 2017 each time going through the same treatment and forcing him to take the year out of University. When Matt finally returned to Loughborough, he achieved a First-Class Honours Degree in Economics from Loughborough University!

Sadly, this isn’t the end of the story. Recently Matt has again been admitted for the 5th time and is again being treated.

Every visit Matt had to Addenbrookes it was in the Teenage Cancer Trust Ward, all 5 times. The treatment he has received has been amazing – the unit provides a unique atmosphere and the staff are truly brilliant. Being in the unit is a really humbling experience and without the funding provided by the Teenage Cancer Trust none of it would have been possible.

Jamie has set the target to raise £2500 for the TCT but I know if we all donate we can easily go beyond that!
