Match report Last week's disappointing defeat to Watsonians made it all but impossible for us to clinch promotion, and meant that our opponents, SMRH 4s required just one bonus point to be sure of second place.

Unusually, the captain won the toss and decided that having batted so poorly last week, it might be prudent to have a bowl first. Ian and Adam both bowled well, inducing a couple of aerial shots but no real chances from the SMRH openers, Taylor in particular looking very dangerous. A change of bowling saw the first wicket fall with Ryan causing Robertson to sky a drive for Gerry to take an excellent one handed catch at mid off. Gerry removed Taylor lbw for a fine 52, then he and Ryan took two further wickets apiece. Gerry's were both clean bowled, including opposition captain Higgins through the gate. Ryan induced a catch by Ross at mid wicket off a full toss, then an excellent clean bowled, clipping the top off off stump. Kane and Morrison then set about rebuilding the SMRH innings and both made good scores of 30+ scoring reasonably easily off the slower bowlers. Dom got the breakthrough wicket with a catch by Brad at mid wicket and Ian (1) and Adam (2) took the final 3 wickets clean bowled. This left SMRH with a very good total of 176 all out. Good contributions from all the bowlers. The sunny weather meant we had tea down by the pitch which was most pleasant.

The captain decided that he would shake up the batting order by putting Ryan in to open - purely a tactical decision, and nothing to do with Ryan having to leave early. Honest. This worked out well, as Ryan and Brad moved the score on at a good rate, reaching drinks on 77 without loss. Ryan should probably have already left, so went out after drinks with the intention of getting his maiden 50 and getting out so he could leave. This he managed pretty quickly and he ended up with a fantastic 52 from 76 balls including a number of shots all round the wicket. At this stage we needed 6 an over and Ian was unfortunate to get out when he chipped a simple catch, having been momentarily blinded by the sun. Or so he claimed. The rate began to get away from us with the SMRH bowling being extremely tight and efficient and their fielding, as ever, was excellent. With the game slipping out of reach, Ian Irving was sent up the order as a pinch hitter and blasted 3 fours from his first 3 balls to give us some hope. However he was bowled in the final over for 20 (off 10 balls!). Graham (2) came and went, bowled attempting to slog Taylor to the leg side and the innings finished with Brad unfortunately stranded at the non-strikers end on 49* and us 18 runs short of SMRHs total.

Thanks to David and his team for another fun, close game and good luck in division 7 next season.

In summary a very enjoyable and pretty successful season for the 3s, availability and selection issues notwithstanding! Thanks to everyone who played this year and I hope you all enjoed it as much as I did.

Note, the ESCA website currently says this was a 'no result'. I'm adamant I've input the scores correctly (go on, check them!) and I think the problem is on their end.
