Leverstock Green Cricket Club 1st XI v Northchurch on Sat 16 May 2015 at 1.00pm
Leverstock Green Cricket Club Won by 43 runs
Match report
Highlights: Miles Barnard 59, Dayle Littlejohn 52; Imran Iqbal 3-30, Adam Thomas 3-32.
Leverstock Green made it 2 from 2 in the league with a hard fought win over Northchurch at Bedmond Road. Dayle Littlejohn won the toss and opted to bat on a pitch that looked a little soft following the rain earlier in the week. Miles Barnard made light of the slow surface though, launching the first ball of the game for 4 and continuing in aggressive fashion, striking the ball very well down the ground. He raced to a 1st league 50 for LGCC in 40 balls, going on to a very entertaining 59 off 43 balls with six fours and three big sixes before perishing whilst attempting to go big again. No other LGCC batsman enjoyed the same level of comfort, as the new ball jagged about a bit. Oli Johnson's gentle-looking inswing did the damage, picking up the first three wickets, with Barnard bowled, Koch chopping on, and Claxton inside edging to the keeper. Charlie Mahanama sparkled briefly with a run a ball 21 before a looping outside edge off Calder saw his end. Mark Landau managed to pick out LGCC groundsman (and Northchurch skipper) Mark Hobley at short cover, to leave LGCC 110/5 having been 77/0. Littlejohn refused to allow a collapse, and batted with great determination for a patient and skilful 52 off 110 balls, putting on 26 with Dave Tyson, and 54 with Majid Khan. Tyson was caught at midwicket trying to find the boundary, Abbas Ali LBW to Calder, before Littlejohn was eventually bowled by Garraway trying to push the rate on. Imran Iqbal cracked his first ball for 4 then was bowled by Hobley, and last man Adam Thomas fell to the same bowler, as LGCC were bowled out for 198 from the final ball of the 49th over.
Nearly 200 was always going to be a tough chase, but whilst there was some movement for the opening bowlers Khan and Thomas, Northchurch managed to put a partnership of 21 together for the first wicket, before Khan got Meagher to edge to 2nd slip where Koch took the catch. Button followed him back to the pavilion soon afterwards, trapped LBW by Thomas. Tom Calder played some nice shots, particularly through midwicket, but received scant support. Garraway was bowled by Thomas and Barry LBW to the same bowler to leave Northchurch 37/4. Khan and Thomas were followed by Iqbal and Littlejohn and both bowlers picked up wickets, Bateman LBW to Littlejohn, before Iqbal bowled Calder for 28. Littlejohn picked up the dangerous Hobley, with Adam Thomas pouching the catch at deep midwicket. At 90/7 it appeared that LGCC had all but prevailed. Andy Meager and Ali Fantham dug in, rode their luck a little, and played with sense and controlled aggression as they put together a 56 run partnership. It took the introduction of spin to make the breakthrough, with Koch having Meager caught at long on by Majid Khan. Fantham was then bowled by Iqbal, and after some brief resistance the same bowler finished things off by bowling Suckling for 2. LGCC ran out victors by 43 runs, with a visit to Holtwhites Trinibis next on the slate.
